This session explores the historical and intergenerational trauma experienced by Native American communities and its impact on participants in treatment courts. Participants will learn strategies to build trust, foster culturally sensitive relationships, and adopt trauma-informed practices to better serve Native American individuals navigating the justice system.
Research has been done on the impact of historical trauma on Indigenous people. However, there is very little research done on understanding the impact and how to build trust with Indigenous participants in treatment court settings. The Substance Use, Mental Health, and Trauma Treatment and Recovery Best Practice Standards emphasize the importance of collaborative, person centered treatment planning and co-occurring substance use and mental health or trauma treatment (sections B and I). Understanding the experiences of Indigenous participants help to develop individualized services for participants.
